Climbing Kawa Ijen

The most impressive Indonesian volcano is Kawah Ijen (2,600m) on Eastern Java with its turquoise-colored acid crater lake and active sulphur mine. The track to the crater is about 3 km of which only 1.5km is a bit of a steep climb. The path is marked almost every few hundred meters. On the way you will come accros a former volcanology viewing post that serves drinks. During the climb, you will meet hardworking sulphur miners displaying great strength, balance and work ethics as they go about their business trying to earn their living. The view at the top of the mountain is breathtaking. To be able to see the blue flames in the crater you should leave the villa at 23:00. Your approximate arrival time back in Sumberkima will be 11 o’clock in the morning.
